PHILOSOPHY FOR MEDITATIONS

CONSCIOUSNESS :
tree leaf

Touch yourself for a moment anywhere on your body. On one level you experience yourself as a body. On another level the experience is but always and entirely an experience of consciousnesss.

Imagine thus that as human beings and living organisms, it is our consciousness that forms our essence and not just the physical, surface-experienced shell (incluidng the outer appearance of our organs). Thus to heal ourselves deeply we heal our body and our consciousness together as one.

In fact the healing of our consciousness is more primary than the healing of the body because the body is just the surface appearance of all the layers of our consciousness.

To heal something, however, it is necessary to know its nature and our western worldview doesn't provide that knowledge. Thus imagine also that consciousness in all of its forms (surface masks) represents a kind of “universal relationship of connection” - or a connection to everything and in every direction. This why live forms which are conscious will grow in radiant or organic directions as with radiant growth of tree branches, the veins of a leaf, the iris of our eyes, and so on. This means that it is our consciousness that connects us both inwardly to allow us to also be whole, alive, and healed and outwardly to the world around us.

A SPLIT:

Next imagine that this consciousness in all of nature splits into two fundamental activities or two directions: one towards its self (nurturing connective consciousness) and the other away (towards separative awareness  in a continuum to unconsciousness).  Also consider that these two directions involve our aligning ourselves with what moves to-and-from the underlying oneness or wholeness and healing of ourselves.  If we are moving away from our wholeness we are becoming ill. In the western worldview, we try to heal first physically and then maybe psychologically (and with both often treated chemically). In Raw-Wisdom's alternative view, we heal our consciousness first and above all - moving it to the connective side. The rest then falls into alignment.

SPLIT BRAIN:
split

The two sides of our brain, the right and left hemispheres, tend to tune into bi-lateral consciousness. The right brain tends to best take in connective consciousness, and the left brain separative consciousness. The highest paradigms of the left-brain are the mathematical because math symbols best guide the sharpest separation of all elements of consciousness. Going against the healing essence of consciousness, however, this is a reflection that we need a different understanding to deeply heal.

WHAT THIS MEANS IN OUR PRACTICES

Mother and Child Meditation

HEALING OUR CONSCIOUSNESS:
 healing consciousness

What this means is that we choose in meditations to form images and select words that reflect what is more “connective” in our consciousness - and mentally, emotionally and physically. For example we veer toward a consciousness of
love, harmony, relaxation, letting go of stress, being at ease, melting, feeling at one, forgiving, letting be, flowing, and ultimately being completely at peace. What makes our consciousness oppositely not at peace or ill (as reflected or condensed in physical diseases) involves experiencing conflict, being stressed out, at war, violently upset, hateful, addicted, fearful, toxic, confused, worryed, depressed, in pain, or simply not at peace/at one. Studying this divide between separative and connective awareness is immensely helpful in charting our personal course for meditations.

LEARNING FROM NATUROPATHY:
naturo

In the natural healing arts there is a reversal of diseased conditions that follows a certain order, namely in reverse order to how the symptoms manifested over time. We learn from classical naturopathy that “dis-eased” conditions progress from mild irritations, to inflamations/fevers/rashes, to a more serious “burning outs” of the vital life force. Thus having cancerous tumors, with no feeling or consciousness while metastasizing can be scary. But this is part of the later-stage degenerative process that is more unconscious.  In meditations we undue what is held tight, melt what feels hard, and “put out” what feels like it is on fire or inflamed – and to ultimately return to being at peace, at-one and thereby healed.

STEPS TO MEDITATION

steps

I) A QUIET PLACE WHERE YOU CAN DEEPLY RELAX:
peaceful space

Meditation can be sitting up or lying down. You can meditate first thing in the morning when you wake up, midday or late at night. Mornings I find it helpful to first take a shower, where the state of cleanliness helps make the consciousness clearer, helping the meditations. In one's meditation space, it may also be helpful to bring in pictures or art works that set the mood to relax. Blue-green decorations are advisable. There can be an altar with sacred objects, pictures of loved ones and so on.

II) LOVE BUBBLE:
bubblebubblebubble

Imagine a surrounding force-field or bubble that fills you with an intense sense of being loved and of projecting love.  The act of meditating is meant to heal and thus focusing on love - a connective emotion - supports the life-force in our body, mind, and spirit whose essence is our consciousness.

III) VISUALIZE BEING IN A SACRED HEALING SPACE:
Meditation Island

I sometimes imagine being on an ocean beach with a panoramic view of the water; or at the foot of a waterfall.  Or I can imagine being on an island surrounded by water, with a temple or sacred space where I am in, and at the center of the island with again a panoramic. The temple has a porch with a hammock wherein I can lie and let go of any spinal tensions.

IV) MELTING WHAT IS HARD:

 butter

You can scan your entire body for any sense of hardness, and one part of your body at a time. A wonderful image to use is that of “butter melting.”  We melt what feels hard, tight, and tense. This also evolves into releasing stress. I have found this extremely useful for the seven cervical or neck processes – imagining an image of each is molded out of butter that then melts in a pan. The spine is the most important bone structure in our body to revitalize using meditation.

V) RELAX:
relax

The deeper we relax the more our consciousness is heightened. Imagine you are caught up in a day’s affairs and then close your eyes to concentrate on your body. It takes a while to fully calm down and maybe a half hour later, after meditating, you will see how much more aware you are of your body and surroundings compared to initially. This helps to explain that a “raising of consciousness” is not something mystical, imagined or hypothetical but quite simple and real. Consciousness rises as we relax. We are more fully connected with and to our own state of being.   Thus it is important to relax whenever possible, and directing that to every part of your body. Because connective consciousness forms the essence of life we are not machines made of separate parts (defined mathematically or by high abstractions of separation). In trying to deeply relax, some will find it helps to actually tense muscles and then relax them. Others prefer to do this just mentally. Experiment and use your intuition to find the approaches, images, postures, places and times that best suit you.

VI) LET GO OF SEMOTIONAL/MENTAL CONFLICTS:

We sometimes define ourselves by our stuggles, worries, addictions, illnesses - everything that seems to make us unwhole. By contrast, during meditations we veer to "getting over it" - becoming  more than ourselves and part of the healing flow of all of life and all of nature within.  As water puts out fire, so also will the images of soft and gentle water flowing help  to counter the experience of fiery stress, pain, inflammation, "itises," fogginess, toxicity, itching, stimulation and the like in the awareness of the body. These are all manifestations of "separative consciousness" as experienced from the inside out.

VII) DEAL PAIN/ FIRE/ HYPERACTIVITY/ TIGHTNESS:
pain

This means actually going into the consciousness of pain or of body or emotions or mind having conflicts/stresses (rather than taking painkillers, anti-depressants or dealing with uneasy states via alcohol and food addictions).  Pain is a vital consciousness messenger. It brings healing. If you cut a finger, the consciousness travels immediately to the site of the tear, the separation, in order to connect and heal because that is the essence of consciousness, of life itself. It tells us something needs to be attended to. To stand in the way of that attending consciousness prevents healing.

VIII) SOFTLY, GENTLY FLOWING WAVES OF WATER:
blue waters

I usually begin with an awareness of the fingers of my hand, and as if each finger's energy is flowing or moves like the flow of soft & gentle waves of water. I do this repeatedly and in different directions.  Thus there is a flowing sense of each finger, moving in and out of the consciousness of the finger. We can also image a flow sideways and diagonally or in every other imaginable direction (including spherically and revolving). This can end with a general and consummating dissolving or a total relaxation.   From the fingers we can move up to the same with the inner experience of our palms, wrists, lower and upper arms, shoulders, neck and head. Then the middle and lower parts of the body can be likewise relaxed as deeply. The process can be repeated in the same or reverse order if one does not yet feel fully relaxed. The intent is to make the experience all-encompassing.  Remember that it takes about ten times as much alkalinity to counter acidity (a concentrated “separative consciousness”). The same happens with meditations, especially when directed at relieving or unwinding fiery stress and pain. Be patient.  Keep repeating similar healing images until there is success in terms of peace within at the deeper layers.  Try to meditate daily, best at the beginning and end of the day, and keep going deeper. Don’t be discouraged by a few tries that don't quite make it.  As water overcomes fire so consciousness can overcome unconsciousness. Healing processes ultimately will conquer the worst of ailments if one submits or puts oneself into true alignment. That is the law. Separation (or unconsciousness) is just a surface thin appearance.  Connectedness (consciousness) forms the deeper or fuller essence of ourselves and all of nature.

IX) COLOR: blueblue
bluebluecolor
blue waves     buddha

In the mind’s eye we can imagine being in a  room of the inner imagined sacred space or temple (as described at the beginning of the meditation) and on an island surrounded by a calm and peaceful ocean – or whatever your favorite image is to bring about a deep sense of peace. Now imagine one part of this space is dedicated to pouring onto all of your presence some green-blue or blue-violet colors of the rainbow. With this color therapy you might use the juice of blueberries. Or imagine your body is covered by blue light coming through a Tiffany stained glass window depicting blue whisteria. Green, blue and violet type of colors are always on the relaxing side of the rainbow. You can imagine these colors being sprayed onto you like a mist or with the finest of  nano-particles that penetrate deep within.  You can further imagine standing under a color-filled waterfall in a lush tropical forest and smelling its lavender-blue flowers and drinking a purple-blue ambrosia juice made from its fruits that helps you most deeply relax.

X) SOUND:

 om
tibet
There are many meditation music tapes that help set the tone. I especially like the music of Steve Halpern. Also chants can help. The words “home” (a place to be at peace) and “shalom” (being at peace), the “om” sound all have a circular rounding of the lips to make the “o” (symbolizing oneness). A circle or “o” has no “oppositional corners” or all points are blended smoothly to form a circle. This represents what consciousness needs to emulate to be raised – the lack of conflict, opposition, and stress in order to be at one. The “m” sound then helps to reverberate the “o”  and in a gentle almost whispered and deep flowing out. Sometimes I imagine a small group or multitude of  old Tibetan monks surrounding me, and thus helping me with these deep reverberating chants. The sounds can also be directed into the parts of our bodies that need the most conscious attention or healing. For more information on sound healing, explore the sound healing network and several sound healing conferences and gatherings.

CONCLUSION

Meditation Conclusion

Combine all these above elements and the body will begin to be at peace.

Start your morning this way instead of drinking a cup of coffee. We often turn to coffee in the morning because we have not slept deeply enough to wake up full of energy.  What caffeine does is to stimulate the adrenalin glands to further depletion. These are the fire-glands that set us in motion, but only in the way a car is set in motion by burning fuel. It triggers also fight and flight.  This energy is, however, on the separative or non-healing and non-consciousness raising side. It is only helpful in doing  mechanical work. If we want to work at a higher level of consciousness, and with depth of healing and productivity, it is best to do the very opposite. Skip the coffee and start your day by deeply relaxing in meditations.
When you feel sufficiently at one, bring the meditation to a soft landing and with a promise to keep that sense of calm – and thus consciousness presence - throughout your entire peaceful day.
