Organic 101: How Can I Tell if Produce is Organic?
Most grocery shoppers are aware of the stickers found on the majority of produce. These stickers assist the teller in determining exactly what type of produce you are buying and charging it out correctly at the register in addition to assisting in inventory management.
So how can you tell if you are purchasing conventional, organic or genetically modified produce? Well, it’s easier than you may have thought; just look at the code. Organic produce has a five digit code beginning with a 9, conventional produce has a four digit code and genetically modified produce has a five digit code beginning with an 8. The next time you’re on the hunt for organic produce in your Denver-metro area store, be sure to check out the codes on the stickers. They’re there to help both the consumer and the retail establishment.
